The Rain had said,
           "Keep reaching toward the light."

Tovina's reaches grew desperate. "The light, the light, why always a little farther from me? Will I never reach that dim, dim light I see through this darkness?"

She remembered how she had before in the bright, spring days awaited the sunrise. "It's always darkest just before the dawn," someone had said. Now she bitterly wondered how much darker must it get. Might the dim, dim light go out?

Other branches saw a droop. Said some, "We all have shriveled grapes. Why fret?"

"Care you not," came the tear-torn words, "for the light in his eyes, for the grapes you could be bearing, for those who go away unsatisfied? Care you not at all?"

With that, some of those branches drooped a bit, and Tovina saw it. Never again, she decided, would any other being see inside this branch.
