Psalm 46: Mountains Moved
Written by Wilma Zalabak, M.Div.

Perhaps you have identified something to which you look as a source for meeting some need of yours and that source isn't producing as expected. Perhaps you didn't get the raise you needed. Perhaps a city official was unavailable when you needed help.

So, you are turning to God as the Source of everything you need. You have given over this thing to which in the past you have looked for help, given it over to God. Then suppose this erstwhile expected source disappears out of your life. Suppose you lose your job, your spouse leaves, your doctor dies.

The things I looked to for help created a sort of structure for my life. Then I started asking God to curse my dependance on anything that stood in the way of my looking directly to God as the Source of all good in my life. Now God decided to move some mountains out of the way so I could focus on God. It can be scary!

The Psalmist knew about human fear when mountains are moved.

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved and the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea, though the sea waters roar and swell, though other mountains shake and quake" (Psalm 46:1-3).

So I am not to be afraid when these mountains that I prayed to be moved suddenly are moved. Further, there is something I am to do about it.

The Lord says through the Psalmist, "Be still and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10).

This is how I can cope with drastic changes in my life. I can do two things.

I can be quiet. I can work to get quiet on the inside.

And I can choose to believe that God is still God. I can choose each moment to continue believing that God is God.
