Psalm 34:8: Prayer as Savoring God's Presence

I recently read the book by Michael Yaconelli, Dangerous Wonder: the Adventure of Childlike Faith (Colorado Springs, CO: NavPress, 1998). One chapter in particular caught my interest. It is entitled, "Wide-eyed Listening," and I think you can see in your mind's eye a child doing just that.

Yaconelli has this to say on pages 87 and 88:

"If we want to hear God we have to listen, and yet the one deficiency epidemic among adults is listening. . . .

"I would like to suggest a new way of hearing God's whisper--savoring. Savoring is the lost art of cherishing, appreciating, relishing, . . . soak it in, . . . listen with all of our senses, . . . immerse ourselves in what we are savoring. . . .

"Savoring takes time. Savoring requires our full attention. Savoring utilizes all of us.

"If we truly want to hear God, if we truly want to hear Him speak, then we need to take the time to savor Him. To immerse ourselves in our Father and bask in the intoxicating presence of God's speaking voice--this is prayer. Prayer is savoring God. Savoring is immersing ourselves in His presence, hearing Him with all of our senses." (Emphasis his.)

Ah, savor the Lord with me! "Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good" (Psalm 34:8).
