Today we use the word "church" to refer to any of several different meanings.
1. All believers everywhere (1 Corinthians 10:32; Ephesians 1:22-23). Example: Today's church is manifested in hundreds of different denominations.
2. All believers in a specific geographical location (Acts 11:22). Example: The church in New Orleans worked alongside the Red Cross.
3. Any believers assembled in the name of Jesus (Matthew 18:17-20; Romans 16:5). Example: They prayed together, as church united in Jesus' name, right there on that plane.
4. A meeting of believers assembled in the name of Jesus (Acts 11:26). Example: My neighbors went to church last week.
5. An organization with designated leaders (Acts 14:23). Example: My church just hired a new pastor. This could be a large worldwide organization or a small community organization or any size in between.
6. A building. Example: I love to see a beautiful church standing as a reminder of God's presence in the world. |
