The strangest words of Jesus, which have been ridiculed by many through the ages, caused many to leave him even at the time.

"Does he mean we will be cannibals?" they said, "to eat his flesh, and drink his blood?"

They wanted to eat his abundant bread and make his living person into the king they so desired.

So Jesus told them what they must eat is his words, devour them, make them part of their inner being, "for they are spirit and they are life."

Many left, some stayed. Those who stayed said "you have the words of eternal life."
