The Law as Characteristics of God
Written by Wilma Zalabak, M.Div.

Who is this God? What are the characteristics of God? Where shall we go to get acquainted?

Why, to the law, of course! Like a transcript of God's character.

1. He is so absolutely real and willing to be thoroughly present with me that He is the only One I need.

2. He is so absolutely real that He is beyond my greatest imagninings.

3. He is Master at saying only what He means and He has the power to back it up.

4. He balances rest and work so that relationships have top priority and so that there is time for everything--eternity.

5. He is the original mentor, with experience unlimited.

6. He is so vibrant with life itself that He creates life by His word, heals by His presence, and guards all aspects of His creatures' sense of personal existence.

7. He is three in one, a family.

8. He owns everything by creation, but He delegates stewardship rights to His creatures and respects their choices.

9. He is truth itself, authenticity embodied.

10. He pursues His goals in a contented manner, calmly and without trampling on others.

Thus the law besomes a high priority near the end of this age. The misunderstanding of God's character is what has brought the evil to this world, and it is the clearing up of that misunderstanding which will make way for the fullness of His kingdom. The last message is a revelation of His character, and when that character is mirrored in His people, He will come.

Psalm 19 compares to a time when the glory, or character, of God will be made thoroughly manifest, as the spotlight of history brings together and focusses three different dimensions of that glory.

1. All nature convulses with language and light for the deliverance of God's people, the laws of nature, as it were, giving way in deference to the law of the Ten Commandments (Psalm 19:1-6).

2. Then are seen in the heavens the tables of God's law, convicting all humans of that law's desirability for conversion, wisdom, joy, enlightenment, endurance, and truth, besides for warning and reward (Psalm 19:7-11).

3. All this for the vindication and deliverance of a people who have held the law in such esteem that God could cleanse them from secret faults and presumptuous sins, planting in them words and thoughts acceptable in His sight (Psalm 19:12-14).

Let us pray with David, "It is time for Thee, Lord, to work, for they have made void Thy law" (Psalm 119:126).
